Food photography lighting basics: practical setups for restaurants without a studio

Window light, diffusion, foam-board reflectors, and a cheap two-LED setup. The lighting fundamentals every restaurant owner needs to shoot food themselves.

Lighting is roughly 80 percent of why a food photo works or fails. Composition matters, styling matters, the camera barely matters at all. The good news is that fixing your lighting takes a window, ten euros of foam board, and roughly an hour of practice. Here is the practical version, with real distances, wattages, and timings.

Window light is the foundation of food photography lighting

A medium-sized north or east-facing window between roughly 10:00 and 14:00 is the best free light source any restaurant has. The reason is that the sun at that hour is high enough to be soft and diffuse but not so high it disappears, and a window the size of a typical Dutch kitchen window acts as a natural softbox. The standard professional setup is to place the dish on a table directly next to the window, with the light coming from the side, and a reflector on the opposite side bouncing fill into the shadows. Direct sun through a clear window is bad. The shadows are razor sharp, the highlights blow out, and the contrast is too high for a phone camera to handle. An overcast afternoon is much better than a sunny one. If your only window faces south and the sun is direct, hang a sheer white curtain or a single layer of baking paper across the glass. That is your diffuser.

Why flash lighting is wrong for restaurant food photography

Built-in phone flash and pop-up camera flash are the worst lighting available for food. The flash sits a centimetre from the lens, fires a millisecond burst of intense light directly at the subject, and produces three predictable failures: harsh shadows behind the plate, blown-out highlights on glossy surfaces, and a flat, plastic look across everything. Professional photographers do use studio flash with food, but they manage it with large softboxes, scrims, careful positioning, and post-processing. None of that is realistic for a restaurant owner shooting their own menu between services. Continuous light is easier to work with because you can see the effect on the food before you press the shutter, instead of guessing and chimping. Use natural light or continuous LED. Skip flash entirely.

Golden hour for food lighting is roughly 10:00 to 14:00 indoors

The "golden hour" most photographers talk about is the half hour around sunrise and sunset. For food shot indoors next to a window, the useful window is wider and shifted: roughly 10:00 to 14:00 on an overcast day, or 10:00 to noon and 14:00 to 16:00 if it is sunny outside and you are diffusing the light. Around midday on a clear day the sun is directly overhead and bounces less light through your window. On overcast days the cloud cover acts as a giant diffuser and the same window stays usable from 09:00 until 17:00.

Practical rule: if you are photographing the dishes for your menu, block off two hours mid-morning on an overcast day, set up next to your largest window, and shoot ten dishes back to back. The light will not change drastically during that block. After 16:00 in winter the colour temperature shifts warm and the light gets thin, and you start fighting the camera's white balance. Save evening service photography for a different approach.

Diffusion with sheer curtains and baking paper softens harsh lighting

Diffusion is what turns harsh direct light into soft wraparound light. The principle is to put a translucent material between the light source and the food so the light scatters across a larger effective area before it hits the plate. The classic professional tool is a five-in-one collapsible diffuser, around 25 to 40 euros at a camera shop. The classic restaurant kitchen alternatives:

  • A sheer white IKEA curtain. Hang it across the window with curtain tape. Roughly 8 to 15 euros. Works for a window up to about 120 centimetres wide.
  • A roll of baking paper. Tape a sheet across the window. Free, but it gets crinkled and looks worse than a curtain in the long run.
  • A white bedsheet on a frame. Use a cheap aluminium photo frame or a wooden stretcher and staple a thin white sheet across it. Lean it against the window. Around 10 euros total.

The visible test: with diffusion, the shadow under the plate has a soft edge that fades over a centimetre or two. Without diffusion, the shadow has a sharp line and a high-contrast edge. If the shadow looks sharp, add another layer of diffusion or move the food further from the window.

A foam-board reflector is the cheapest lighting upgrade

If you only buy one piece of food photography gear, buy a 70 by 100 centimetre sheet of white foam board. The Hema and Action both sell them for under five euros. Place it on the opposite side of the dish from the window, angled inward at roughly 45 degrees, around 30 to 60 centimetres from the food. It bounces some of the window light back into the shadow side of the plate and reduces the contrast between the lit side and the dark side.

Replica Surfaces' guide on reflectors and diffusers covers this in more depth, but the short version is that a white foam board produces soft, neutral fill, a silver foil reflector produces brighter and slightly cooler fill, and a gold reflector warms the fill toward sunset tones. For most savoury food the white board is correct. For pastries, desserts, and warm-toned dishes a gold reflector occasionally helps. Skip the silver one unless you know exactly what you want it for.

You can build a black "negative fill" reflector the same way with a sheet of black foam board. Use it instead of the white one when you want deeper shadows for moody, fine-dining-style photos rather than bright delivery-app photos.

Side light beats front light in food photography lighting

Front light, where the light source is directly behind the camera and pointing at the food, is the worst direction for food photography. It removes shadows, kills texture, and flattens the dish into a single plane. Nicolesy's photography lighting breakdown shows the same dish under front, side, and back light, and the front-lit version reads as the worst by a wide margin in every comparison we have seen.

Side light, where the light comes from 90 degrees to the camera, reveals texture: the sear on a steak, the crumb on a piece of cake, the steam coming off a bowl of ramen, the crispy edges of fried chicken. Back light, where the light comes from behind the food toward the camera, is the most dramatic. It produces strong rim highlights on glasses, pasta, and sauces. It is harder to control and usually needs a stronger reflector on the camera side to fill in the front of the dish. Use back light for hero shots and beverages. Use side light for everything else, and especially for delivery-app photos where consistency matters more than drama.

A two-LED setup is the cheapest backup for restaurant food photography

If you cannot rely on window light, for example because you are shooting in the evening or your kitchen has no good window, a two-LED continuous setup is the cheapest reliable alternative. A practical configuration:

  • Two LED panels at 60 to 100 watts each, 5500K colour temperature, with a CRI of 95 or higher. The 5500K daylight balance is the standard for food photography. Brands like Godox SL60, Aputure Amaran, and the cheaper Neewer panels all hit this spec. Budget around 80 to 200 euros per light.
  • Two light stands, around 20 to 40 euros each.
  • Two softboxes or diffusion umbrellas, around 30 to 50 euros each. Bare LED produces hard light. The softbox is non-optional.

Position the key light at 45 to 90 degrees from the camera, roughly 80 to 120 centimetres from the food. Position the fill light on the opposite side, further back and at lower power, at about a third of the key light's intensity. If your panels do not have variable power, move the fill light further away to reduce its effect, or replace it with a foam-board reflector for a simpler one-light-plus-bounce setup.

The whole rig costs 250 to 600 euros and replaces the window. It is also colour-accurate enough that a phone camera locked to a custom white balance will produce consistent shots across hundreds of dishes, which matters if you are using the Menu Scanner to batch-generate variations from a paper menu and want every reference photo to match.

For a restaurant photographing a six-dish menu once a year, the foam-board-and-window setup pays for itself the first afternoon. For a delivery-only kitchen with eighty rotating menu items, two seasonal updates per year, and three platform listings to keep current, the maths changes. Even a fast amateur takes 20 to 40 minutes per dish including setup, plating, and a few alternates. Eighty dishes is a full week of shooting before you start editing.
