Food photographer vs AI in 2026: real costs for a Dutch restaurant

What a food photographer actually costs in the Netherlands in 2026, what AI generation costs at the same scope, and which one makes sense for your restaurant.

We get asked this almost every week, usually by an owner who has just been quoted €1,200 for a single shoot and wants a sanity check. The honest answer needs numbers from both sides. Below is what a Dutch food photographer charges in 2026, what FoodPic.ai costs at the same scope, and where each option actually wins.

What a Dutch food photographer charges in 2026

We checked rates across a few studios this week. Per-photo numbers cluster around €10 to €25 depending on volume, according to the public pricing pages at Plaatje op je Bord, Magic Eye Studio Amsterdam, Fotostudio Emma, and Het Beeldatelier in Den Haag.

Realistic packages on those pages right now:

  • €250 for roughly one hour on location, around 10 finished photos
  • €395 for a 2-hour basic package, 20 edited images
  • €625 for a half-day shoot, up to 50 photos at €12.50 each
  • €1,200 to €2,500 for a full-day shoot of an entire menu plus interior and staff photography

Internationally, €500 to €2,500 for a session is the typical range, which lines up with the Dutch numbers once you correct for currency.

What is not always quoted upfront: food styling adds 40 to 60 percent on top in many sessions, props are rented separately if you do not bring them, and post-production beyond basic edits often costs extra. A €500 quote ends up at €700 to €800 about half the time.

What AI generation costs at the same scope

FoodPic.ai pricing for the same workload:

  • Free: 3 credits at signup, enough to test on one dish
  • €25 per month: roughly 100 image credits, enough for a 30-dish menu plus some re-runs
  • €49 per month: ~250 credits, enough for a 100-dish menu plus regular menu changes
  • €149 per month: unlimited generations, multiple locations, custom styles

A credit covers one generation. A typical dish takes one generation if the input photo is reasonable, occasionally two if you want to compare styles. The full pricing breakdown is on the pricing page.

Where the photographer wins

A photographer is the right answer when you need any of these:

Editorial-grade images that go on a printed menu, cookbook, or magazine spread. AI lighting still reads as flat for high-end editorial work. A photographer with a real softbox and a real food stylist still produces a better top-tier image, especially if it gets printed at A3 size or bigger.

Brand identity beyond food. Interior shots, staff portraits, the chef in the kitchen, the front of the building. A photographer can do all of that in one session. AI handles food, not your dining room.

A small, stable menu. If you serve 8 dishes that have not changed in three years, one €1,200 session pays for itself. AI subscription costs more over the same period.

Anything trust-sensitive. Wedding catering, corporate-event menus, fine dining where the customer has a relationship with you. Real photos signal "this is what we actually serve". Generated photos can do the same job, but the perception difference is real.

Where AI wins

A menu that changes monthly. A photographer at every change is €4,000 to €8,000 a year. AI subscription is €300 to €1,200 a year for the same coverage.

Scale. Dark kitchens, virtual brands, multi-location operations where adding a dish to one menu means adding it to twelve. No photographer can keep up.

Speed. A new dish goes live tonight. A photographer is booked for next month.

Delivery-only operations. The thumbnail is the entire purchase decision on Thuisbezorgd, Uber Eats, and Deliveroo. Editorial polish does not move that needle, and AI delivers the platform-correct thumbnail dimensions out of the box.

The break-even math

For a typical 30-dish menu that changes once a year:

  • One €1,200 photographer session, amortized over 12 months: €100/month equivalent
  • FoodPic.ai €25 plan: €25/month

For a 30-dish menu that changes every month:

  • 12 photographer sessions a year at €625 each: €625/month equivalent (impractical, nobody does this)
  • FoodPic.ai €25 plan: €25/month

The crossover happens around: menu changes more than every three months or more than 50 dishes total. If you sit on either side of that line cleanly, the choice is obvious. The grey zone is the 20-dish-stable-menu restaurant, and there we would honestly pick a photographer.

What we would recommend in three real scenarios

Three scenarios from real conversations this year:

Pizzeria, 14 dishes, owner since 2008. Hire a photographer once. Use FoodPic.ai for the four seasonal items you swap in around Christmas and summer. Total annual cost around €700.

Dark kitchen, three brands, 60+ dishes between them, weekly menu tweaks. Skip the photographer. FoodPic.ai €49/mo plan covers all three brands. Annual cost €588.

Bistro, 22 dishes, refreshes the menu each season. Use both. €625 per quarter for a half-day photographer to capture the new seasonal hero dishes (4 to 6 of them), FoodPic.ai €25/mo for the rest. Around €2,800 a year.

You can start with three free credits without committing to anything. If your situation is genuinely closer to the photographer-only side, the test will tell you that quickly, and that answer is worth listening to.
