iPhone vs DSLR for food photography in 2026: what restaurants should actually buy
iPhone 17 Pro versus entry-level mirrorless like the Sony A6700 and Canon R50 for restaurant food photography. Sensor sizes, low-light reality, EUR prices, and which one wins per use case.
This question lands in our inbox every other week. An owner is staring at a €1,300 phone in their pocket and wondering whether the €1,000 mirrorless body in their browser tab will actually deliver better food photos for the menu. The honest answer is "it depends, and probably not the way you think". Below is what each tool genuinely does well in 2026, with real specs, real EUR prices, and the use cases where each one wins.
What "DSLR" actually means in 2026
Quick housekeeping. Almost no restaurant should buy a true DSLR in 2026. The category has moved on. When we say "DSLR" in the rest of this piece, we mean an entry-level mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor and interchangeable lenses, which is what the same money buys today. The two we get asked about most are the Sony A6700 and the Canon EOS R50.
The iPhone side of the question has narrowed too. The iPhone 17 Pro launched in late 2025. The 16 Pro is still on sale and still a serious tool. Older Pros (15 Pro and earlier) are fine for casual work but no longer competitive on telephoto for plated food, so we are leaving them out.
The sensor size gap between iPhone and DSLR
This is the headline spec, and it matters more than anything else.
The iPhone 17 Pro and 16 Pro main camera uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor at roughly 9.8 by 7.3 mm, with 48 megapixels and an f/1.78 aperture, per the iPhone 16 Pro and 17 Pro camera reviews at Lux. The Sony A6700 carries a 26 MP APS-C sensor at 23.5 by 15.6 mm. The Canon R50 uses a 24 MP APS-C sensor at very nearly the same dimensions.
That is roughly a 5x difference in sensor surface area. APS-C collects about five times more light per equivalent exposure, as covered by DPReview's a6700 review.
What that buys you in practice:
- Cleaner low-light shots. Restaurants are dim. Candles, warm tungsten, mixed sources. APS-C handles ISO 1600 to 3200 with very little visible noise. iPhone gets there with computational stacking but starts smearing fine texture on bread, herbs, and grill marks above ISO 800.
- Real, optical depth of field. With a 50mm f/1.8 lens on the A6700 you get genuine creamy bokeh behind a plate. The iPhone's "Portrait mode" is a depth map plus simulated blur, and it still misjudges edges around stacked food, sauce drips, and steam.
- Wider dynamic range. A bright window on the side of a plate will not blow out as easily on APS-C. The iPhone fixes this in software with HDR, which is good but introduces a uniform "computational" look that some chefs dislike.
Where the iPhone wins for food photography
We say this with a straight face: the iPhone wins in more situations than camera shops will admit.
Speed of capture. The dish is hot. Steam rises for thirty seconds, sauce sets in two minutes, garnish wilts in five. An iPhone shoots in one tap, processes in the background, and is on Instagram by the time you have walked back to the pass. A mirrorless body in manual mode with the right lighting takes longer to set up than the food stays photogenic.
Computational photography for delivery thumbnails. Thuisbezorgd, Uber Eats, and Deliveroo all display photos at small sizes on a phone screen. At 800 by 600 pixels, the iPhone's HDR plus Smart Style processing produces a punchy, color-accurate thumbnail that converts. The technical advantages of APS-C disappear at that output size.
Macro at arm's length. The iPhone 17 Pro's 48 MP ultrawide handles macro shots within a few centimeters of the dish, per the technical breakdown at DIYPhotography. Getting that close with a mirrorless camera requires a dedicated macro lens at €400 to €700 on top of the body.
Cost of the second photo. You already own the iPhone. Marginal cost of trying again is zero. A €1,500 mirrorless setup needs to actually get used to be worth it.
Telephoto reach. The iPhone 17 Pro's 8x optical-quality zoom at 200mm equivalent is genuinely useful for tight detail shots from across a table without disturbing plating, per Apple's own iPhone 17 Pro specs page.
Where the DSLR or mirrorless wins for food photography
Editorial work that gets printed large. A printed menu, a wall portrait of your signature dish, a magazine spread. APS-C with a decent prime lens at f/2.8 to f/4 still looks better at A3 size than an iPhone shot. The texture difference is real and visible.
Controlled studio lighting. If you have set up a softbox and you can actually shoot at ISO 100, the APS-C sensor pulls ahead on color depth, highlight roll-off, and post-processing latitude. You can recover shadows in raw that the iPhone simply cannot.
Fully manual control over depth of field. A real f/1.8 prime lens delivers genuinely shallow focus that no computational simulation matches. For shots where the focus plane is the whole story (a single hand-pinched dumpling, a pour of olive oil hitting burrata), this matters.
Tethered shooting and ergonomics over long sessions. Two hours of shooting 30 dishes is genuinely uncomfortable on a phone. A mirrorless body with a strap and a viewfinder is built for it. The same is true for our food photography lighting basics workflow when you are using strobes.
Real EUR prices for 2026
We checked Dutch retailers this week. Body or device only, no extras:
- iPhone 17 Pro 256 GB: €1,329, per Coolblue and Mac Index Netherlands listings
- iPhone 16 Pro 256 GB: around €1,099 to €1,189 at most NL retailers in mid-2026
- Sony A6700 body only: around €1,400 at Cameraland and Kamera Express, sometimes €1,268 to €1,300 on promotion, per the price tracking thread on DPReview Forums
- Canon EOS R50 body only: €839, kit with RF-S 18-45mm at €959, per Cameranu.nl and Canon Nederland Store
Two important footnotes. The mirrorless prices are body-only. Add €300 to €600 for one usable food lens (a 35mm or 50mm prime). And the Canon R50's native APS-C lens lineup is genuinely thin, as DPReview's R50 review flags clearly. If you are shopping new lenses long-term, Sony's E-mount is the safer ecosystem.
Real total cost of ownership for a restaurant
The body is not the cost. The kit is. A working setup for restaurant food photography:
- iPhone path: iPhone 17 Pro (€1,329), small tripod with phone clamp (€40), continuous LED panel for fill light (€80). Total €1,449.
- Mirrorless path: Sony A6700 body (€1,400), Sigma 30mm f/1.4 prime for E-mount (€419), tripod (€120), softbox with stand (€180), reflector (€30). Total €2,149.
The mirrorless path costs about 50 percent more for the entry tier, and that is before you factor in time learning manual exposure, lighting, and post-processing in Lightroom. For a restaurant owner who is already running a kitchen, that learning curve is the real cost.
What we would buy in three scenarios
Pizzeria, 14 dishes, photos for delivery apps and Instagram. iPhone 17 Pro plus a €40 tripod. Done. The mirrorless setup will not produce delivery thumbnails that convert better, and Instagram crops everything to 1080 by 1080 anyway.
Bistro, 30+ dishes, prints menus quarterly, runs a website with hero images. Sony A6700 with a 35mm f/1.8 prime, plus an iPhone for fast Instagram updates. The hero shots on the printed menu and the website justify the kit. Daily social work goes through the phone.
Dark kitchen, multiple brands, weekly menu changes. Skip both, mostly. Use the iPhone 16 Pro you already own for capturing reference photos, and run them through our food photo generator to produce platform-ready thumbnails at scale. A camera body sitting in a drawer because the operations team does not have time to use it is the worst possible outcome.
The honest verdict
If your food photography is going on a delivery app, an Instagram feed, or any screen smaller than a tablet, the iPhone 17 Pro produces results that nobody outside a camera review will tell apart from APS-C output. The €700 to €900 you would have spent on a mirrorless kit goes further on lighting, props, and a food stylist for half a day.
If your food photography is going on a printed menu, a magazine, or a 4-meter restaurant wall, buy the Sony A6700 and a 35mm f/1.8. Spend the time learning it. Or hire a professional and skip both questions.
